In addition to the rider’s age, insurers base the quoted rate for moped coverage on driving history, geographic location, and the make and model driven.

Some agencies will not issue a policy to someone only 16, so sharing insurance coverage with your parents or guardians might be necessary.

A shared policy is often cheaper than one issued directly to a 16-year-old.

What Is the Cost of Moped Insurance for 16-Year-Olds in the United States?

There is a significant difference in moped insurance costs throughout the United States for 16-year-olds. When requesting quotes from insurers, I found the average prices were lowest in Pennsylvania at $67 per month, while California teens pay the most at $157 monthly.

That means the annual difference for 16-year-olds between the cheapest and most expensive states is more than $1,000 annually.

When averaging the quotes received throughout all 50 states for moped insurance, teens with a 3.0 GPA or higher and no accidents on their record can reduce their cost to about $85 per month. Otherwise, the national average of $99 monthly is a reasonable estimate to consider.

What Insurance Companies Offer the Cheapest Rates for 16-Year-Olds?

When speaking with national insurance companies about moped insurance for 16-year-olds, I found three willing to issue a policy.

Nationwide offered me the best rate, which totaled $79 per month. Progressive was next at $87 monthly, while Allstate offered $145.

Since these rates included full coverage, I asked about a liability-only policy. Progressive told me that rates begin at $75 per year (not monthly). Allstate and Nationwide had similar rates that were about the cost of one month of full coverage if you went with a liability-only option.

How to Make Moped Insurance Cheaper for Teens

The average cost of moped insurance for 16-year-olds is higher than it is for other age groups, but there are some ways that teens can reduce costs.

  1. Choose a Less Powerful Engine

Most mopeds come with a 49cc engine “or less” by definition. If you request an insurance quote for a model with the biggest displacement allowed, you’ll typically pay a little more than you would for a model with less power.

  1. Take a Safety Course

Completing a recognized moped safety course can demonstrate to insurance companies that you are a responsible rider, potentially leading to lower premiums. You’ll need to provide a certificate or proof that you passed the classes to receive this discount.

  1. Higher Deductibles

Agreeing to pay a higher deductible in the event of a claim can lead to lower insurance premiums for comprehensive and collision coverage options. You’ll save on your monthly premiums but pay more out-of-pocket if an accident occurs.

It might be cheaper to have a liability-only policy, especially if you’re a teen moped rider with an older model to insure.

  1. Choose a Reliable Moped

Insurance companies may consider the safety features of the moped when calculating premiums. Opting for a moped with good safety ratings and anti-theft features could help you save a little on your monthly costs.

A moped with more features might cost more, so try to balance the increased price with the savings you’ll receive on your monthly insurance premiums.

  1. Compare Quotes

Rates can vary significantly between insurance providers, so it’s important to shop around and get quotes from different companies to find the most affordable option. Since many larger insurers don’t offer policies in this category, you might have more luck working with a regional agent or specialty agency until you get a little older.

  1. Avoid Claims

Sometimes, paying for minor damages to your moped out-of-pocket might be more cost effective than filing a claim and potentially facing increased premiums.

  1. Store Your Moped Safely

Keep your moped in a secure location to reduce theft risks. Your options might include a garage at home, a lockable cover, or another spot where instant access to it isn’t available.

Moped insurance for 16-year-olds can be expensive, so discussing all possible options with different insurers is essential to find the right fit for your riding needs.
