Voom Insurance Review: Revolutionizing Motorcycle Insurance with Pay-Per-Mile Coverage

VOOM motorcycle insurance is a specialized product designed to offer riders tailored protection that is often more comprehensive than what’s included in a standard policy.

Coverage can vary but generally includes collision damage, theft, and liability for injuries or property damage. Some policies also offer roadside assistance and gear protection.

How Does VOOM Motorcycle Insurance Work?

Instead of paying a flat annual fee for your motorcycle insurance, VOOM bases its rates on your actual monthly mileage. An additional rate is added between $3 to $30 monthly for basic or extended options for different coverage types, respectively.

That means if you ride less, you won’t pay as much for your monthly insurance needs. It is typically a few cents per mile for each ride.

Instead of attaching a GPS tracker to your motorcycle, VOOM requires you to take a picture of your odometer each month. Once you submit that info, you’ll pay the agreed rate accordingly.

According to them, if you don’t ride your motorcycle daily, a VOOM policy could save you up to 60% on your insurance needs.

Pros and Cons of Using Pay-Per-Mile Motorcycle Insurance

VOOM has been offering pay-per-mile coverage since 2021. This structure has some benefits and potential concerns to evaluate.

This structure can generate substantial savings opportunities for casual riders. Some plans might have additional fees, like going over a certain number of miles.
Pay-per-mile insurance can incentivize you to ride less and opt for greener transportation methods if you’re conscious about your environmental footprint.Taking pictures of your odometer can generate privacy questions for riders.

FAQs About VOOM Motorcycle Insurance

What Is Covered Under a VOOM Policy?

Under the Essentials package, you receive a standard policy that covers everyday riding needs with liability coverage, uninsured motorist protection, and third-party property damage.

The Popular Plan offers higher liability coverages, with collision and comprehensive added. Medical expenses are included.

For the Extended option, you receive additional protections within a premium package.

Does VOOM Track My Riding Routes?

VOOM does not use any tracking devices to record your mileage. You report this information by taking a picture of your odometer, which can be sent to the company through its app.

What Happens If I Don’t Share My Odometer Reading?

If you forget to share your odometer photo with VOOM, you will be charged a default amount for that month. Sending an updated reading with lower mileage will cause future payments to be adjusted accordingly.

When Are Miles Charged with VOOM?

Your miles get charged at the end of each month. Riders are required to put a card on file during the underwriting process, and then you get a billing statement at the end of the month.

Is It Worth Using VOOM Motorcycle Insurance?

VOOM wasn’t right for me. I tend to put on a lot of miles each year, so the calculation made my rates about 15% more than what I currently pay through a more traditional provider.

For me, the idea of remembering the odometer picture was a bit of a hassle. It felt easier to get charged the default rate, even if it would be more expensive.

There are certainly advantages for low-mileage riders with VOOM. If you ride fewer than 2,000 miles annually, your savings could be significant! For that reason, it’s worth calculating what your rate would be.
